📕 Book Summary

This week's book is “Don’t believe everything you think” by Joseph Nguyen

Do you always find yourself feeling anxious, doing self-doubt, and always suffering in your thoughts? If yes, then this book can be your next read.

DON'T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU THINK by Joseph Nguyen is a short, easy-to-understand, and beautifully written book that teaches you how to stop overthinking and enjoy a life full of peace and joy. The book explains the difference between thoughts and thinking and shows you that the root cause of our suffering is our thinking.

The thoughts that come to our mind are naturally created, but when we start thinking about those thoughts we start to suffer. This book will help you to understand where our human experiences come from and how we can end our own suffering. Joseph talks about a lot of topics like stopping overthinking, staying in the present moment, listening to one's intuition, and experiencing unconditional love and joy.

Divided into 17 short chapters the book is an easy read with the points clearly explained with Zen parables and examples. Although I felt some parts of the book were repetitive just talking about staying present and stopping thinking by using different words.

Overall this Book is an amazing read that will help you to understand the root cause of all the psychological and mental suffering and how to overcome it.
I would definitely recommend you give it a read.

Here are 10 valuable lessons from the book

  1. Look inside yourself: To find everything you’re looking for in life, you must look inside yourself and discover the wisdom that already exists within you. All the answers lie deep within your soul.

  2. Our reaction will dictate whether we suffer: Pain is unavoidable but how we react to the events and circumstances that happen in our lives is up to us, and that will dictate whether we suffer or not.

  3. We feel what we think: Our feelings do not come from external events but from our own thinking about the events. Therefore, we can only ever feel what we are thinking.

  4. Go beyond listening to your mind only: If you want to be free, happy, peaceful, and full of love, then you will need to let go of listening only to your mind and go beyond it by tuning into something much greater that will help you not just to survive but to thrive.

  5. When we think, We Judge: The moment we think about our thoughts is when we begin to get taken on an emotional rollercoaster. When we think about our thoughts, we begin to judge and criticize the thoughts and experience all sorts of internal emotional turmoil.

  6. Thoughts create thinking destroys:  Thinking destroys because as soon as we begin to think about the thoughts we cast our own limiting beliefs, judgments, criticisms, programming, and conditioning onto the thought thinking of infinite reasons as to why we can’t do it.

  7. Look for truth: Instead of looking for right or wrong, good or bad in the world, look for truth instead of trying to prove we are right and they’re wrong or how they are better and we are worse, look for the truth in what’s in front of you.

  8. Acknowledge the fear: Fear is only present as long as your thinking is revolving around fear. Once you acknowledge the fear and understand that it’s only your thinking that’s causing those feelings, the illusion will fall apart and you’ll fall back into peace joy, and pure love.

  9. Create Space to review new ideas: If you want something new to be created such as new thoughts, then you must first create space so that you can receive new ideas that can change your life.

  10. Less thinking, More Space: The less thinking we have the more space we create for positive emotions to naturally surface.
