πŸ“• Book Summary

This week's book is β€œIkigai” by Hector Garcia and Francesc Miralles

This book is one of my personal favorites and is a really powerful book that will help you to discover your mission in life and will teach you the Japanese secret for living a long and happy life.

In this book, we discover the powerful Japanese concept called "Ikigai", which roughly translates as "happiness in always being busy". This book will show you how to leave the urgency behind, nurture friendships and relationships, and discover your true passion in life.

Moreover, you'll learn how the people in Japan live longer than the rest of the population. You will discover the interviews of the centenarians of Japan, especially from the village of Ogimi which is known to have the highest life expectancy rate in the world. You'll discover the lifestyle of the longest-living people, what they eat, how they start their day, and much more.

Here are 10 valuable lessons from the book

  1. Stay Active, Don't Retire - Don't give up on the things you love, keep doing them. Keep that passion alive even if you professionally retire.

  2. Take it slow - urgency is inversely proportional to the quality of life. Don't rush and take things slow. As the old saying goes, "Walk slowly and you'll go far."

  3. Don't fill your stomach full - According to the 80 percent rule, in order to stay healthier and longer, we should eat a little less than what our hunger demands.

  4. Surround yourself with good friends- Friends are the best medicines. Share your stories, laugh together, have fun, and enjoy life.

  5. Get in shape for your next Birthday- Water always stays fresh when it flows and doesn't stagnate. The same is with our body, when we move our body through exercises and movements, it will stay fresh and will keep running your life for a longer time.

  6. Smile- A happy and cheerful attitude not only helps you stay positive but also helps you to make friends and connect with them. Keep a smile on your face and live life happily.

  7. Reconnect with nature- Nature is one of the most beautiful things in the world. Connect with nature, Spend some time there. This will help you recharge and rejuvenate your energy.

  8. Give thanks- Often in our lives we take things for granted and don't value them. Take some time to give thanks to your parents, your teachers, to the god, and to everyone who made an impact in your life.

  9. Live in the moment- Stop regretting the past and fearing the future. Today is all you have. Make the most out of it.

  10. Follow your IKIGAI- we all have some passion inside us, a unique talent, something that drives us. If you don't know then discover it and follow it.

Actionable Advice:

Here are 3 Actions you can start taking from these insights:

  1. Eat Healthy: Instead of eating oily and junk food, start eating healthy food. Focus on eating a balanced meal and taking proper care of your diet.

  2. Practice meditation and exercise: Start taking some time out to do meditation. Move your body, do exercise. Maintain a healthy physique and value the beautiful body given to you.

  3. Do what you love: Enjoy doing things that you like to do. Taking time to do these things will help you stay happy and positive. Spend time doing your favorite activities.

⚑️ Reading Tip

Want to increase your reading speed?

Try reading the book along with its audiobook. This way when you will read, your mind will try to match your speed with the audiobook speed. Moreover, studies reveal that when more senses are involved ( in this case vision and hearing), then our concentration also increases.

So next time read a book along with its audiobook and see the difference.
